What we do
At the International Center for Research on Eye Violence, we work to bring visibility to, document and transform the state violence that harms the visual integrity of people in contexts of protest, police operations and public order policing.
We rigorously investigate the design, use and omission, and the effects of police, military and security devices, particularly those classified as “less lethal,” which have caused irreversible eye injuries. We analyze their manufacture, procurement, trade and operational deployment in order to expose the associated risks, regulatory gaps and institutional responsibilities.
Our work seeks to protect the right to protest, physical integrity and human dignity by providing technical, scientific and legal evidence that helps combat impunity and strengthen mechanisms of truth, justice and reparation for victims.
We document cases, patterns of violence, policing practices and systemic failures that result in eye damage, both in places of detention and in interventions on the streets. This information feeds specialized reports, public recommendations and educational tools for organizations, institutions, media and communities.
At CIIVO we promote access to reliable information, the building of collective memory and support for affected people, as well as international cooperation in research and human rights defense.
Our work depends on the solidarity and support of those who believe in the importance of protecting eyes as a fundamental right. Your support allows us to keep investigating, educating and acting against eye violence.
